Chestnut-Pear Soup

Chestnut-Pear Soup
This week for "French Fridays With Dorie" our assignment was Chestnut-Pear Soup.  I was so excited to make this soup.  I love chestnuts and combining them with pears - I couldn't wait to taste the combination. What can I say?  The soup wasn't bad but it wasn't that great in my book.   It was bland - there's no other way to say it.  I don't understand why - the soup had enough onions, celery, and rosemary to give it a flavor boost.

Dorie stated in the recipe to serve the soup really hot and season it with salt and pepper.  It didn't matter how hot the soup was or how much salt and pepper I put in, it just did not hit the spot for me.

This recipe can be found on page 82 in "Around My French Table.

  1. I'm sorry this soup just didn't do it for you Geraldine. The combination sounds like it would work. I wonder if it needed to be spiced up a bit. Thanks for sharing...

    P.S. Happy Bundt Day!

  2. Sorry you didn't like it. For me it took additional pepper-heat to get this where I truly enjoyed it. Perhaps if you drizzled with some fun Southwest pepper oil you could have livened it up? I bet you have some there!

  3. Hmm, I found it had a lot of flavor. Then again, I tend to over season my soups to be safe.

  4. Oh no - and your soup looks so good! My only tip is lots of salt and pepper.

  6. Oh, your soup looks so darn pretty, it just had to taste good. Leeks? Did you use leeks? Maybe if you let it sit for a day and let the flavors blend more. My soup really seemed flavorful and I was totally prepared not to like it. I am so sorry, Geraldine. I hate it when that happens......

  7. Oh sorry that you did not like this soup; but it looks great in the pics! At least we tried and perhaps like some, not some and probably most of it!

  8. Interesting another bland soup problem… bummer I think Trevor's suggests might be good, a little good quality EVOO might help too.

  9. Well it looks pretty…too bad after all that work it was lacking in flavor. I wonder if some brandy would have kicked it up a notch! Have a great weekend, Gerry!

  10. Hi! I'm with you, and we seem to be in the minority this week. I found that the flavor of chestnut & pears was overpowered by the leeks - maybe it would be better w/less of those aromatics? Not sure I'll try it again w/$15 worth of chestnuts though. Would much rather turn them into butternut squash & chestnut farro.

  11. So sorry that this didn't live up to your expectations, especially with that high level of anticipation. I guess the other ingredients didn't add enough sexiness and it was still as bland as chestnuts often are plain. Well, maybe you'll like next week's recipe better. There's always hope.

  12. So sorry it didn't hit it for you. Nana was not a fan either. I always say that those darn expectations seem to work in reverse of our actual opinions - so much so that I try not to think too much about the recipe before knocking it out. As I am usually running late and trying to complete it before the Friday deadline, this often does distract me. Hope you have a wonderful "soup season" regardless and find some soup recipes that knock your socks off !

  13. Geraldine, despite the fact that this was not one of your favorite soup recipes, the soup looks so smooth and has a beautiful texture - we also added quite a bit of feshly ground black pepper to it and enjoyed it that way!
Have a great Sunday, dear friend!

  15. They can't all be winners. Yours looks pretty, even if you didn't care for it.
